Managing a Healthy Diet : Foods to Avoid for Weight Loss


Hi, my name is Brenda Thompson, registered
dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition.
In this segment I’m going to talk about foods
to limit when you are trying to lose weight.
First we want to eliminate foods containing
hydrogenated fats, because our goal to lose
weight is to try to become healthier, and
sometimes those fats can increase our chances
of heart disease. We also want to decrease
our high sugar containing foods. A lot of
times these foods have a lot of sugar and
no nutrients, and our goal is to try to eat
as many nutrient dense foods as possible so
that our bodies can become healthier. You
want to avoid foods that are high in saturated
fats and a lot of those are animals foods,
also a lot of high calorie foods that may
have a a lot of nutrients in them, however,
you want to still try to avoid them. Another
thing you might want to avoid is a lot of
the convenience foods. Sometimes eating a
fast food restaurants and them boxed convenience
foods because they are very high in hydrogenated
oils, but also in sodium. So we want to try
to limit those. Here are some examples of
foods, that you might want to try to limit
in your diet. Bacon is a food that contains
a lot of sodium and fat. This is a health
bar. A lot of time health bars will have hydrogenated
oils in them. Although they have a lot of
nutrients, this might be one food that is
loaded with calories and nutrients, however
contains hydrogenated fats. High fat meats
are another food you would like to avoid.
This ground beef is very high in fat so you
would want to avoid it. You would also want
to avoid poultry with skin. Snack foods, although
they look very delicious and taste wonderful,
are foods that we want to try to limit. I’m
not saying that you have to avoid them completely,
but try to limit them throughout the week.
We definitely want to avoid lard in our cooking.
Try to avoid margarine, and also even butter.
When we consume these products, we want to
consume them in very small amounts. Avoiding
whipping cream, or any other kinds of cream
would be a better idea, along with whole milk.
Any whole dairy products we would want to
try to avoid and switch over to a one percent
or to a fat free. These are some boxed convenience
foods that we would want to try to avoid because
they sometimes contain hydrogenated fats,
but also they’re very high in sodium and can
sometimes be high in calories for the portion
sizes. And then, fats that we add for a lot
of baked goods can sometimes be substituted
with other things, such as apple sauce, and
so we want to try and limit those in our diets.
Limiting some of these foods will help you
be successful in lowering your calories for
weight loss.

  • Why the heck is there an EGG w/ foods to avoid. Everything else is completely obvious… but eggs? No way. Even the Cholesterol in eggs is good if you are exercising. Contrary to popular belief Yolks ( from free run eggs ) or very very good for you. I eat amongst other things for breakfast foods 6 egg whites and 2 Regular eggs. The only reason I don't eat 8 eggs is because it can get high in calorie intake when your only eating 2100-2700 depending on goals.

  • if you really want to loose wieght do alott of cardio stay away from foods and drinks that contain high fructose corn syrup get a membership at a 24 hr fitness because you can workout whenever you want I know I was at 240 now am at 215.8

  • @mokugin81 she's wrong and you're wrong. you just need to lower the total number of calories. the average diet provides enough nutrients for anyone, even athletes. just look at what michael phelps eats and drinks! just burn up more calories than you consume and you will lose weight

  • @youngfred116 well, let's take insuline as an example of why high gi foods are bad. as long as you work out a lot you will lower that insulin anyway. So it still comes down to just eating less than you burn up and working out. Of course a healthy diet is better, but for weight loss, amounts of food is more important. There are people who don't really eat healthy who are both pretty muscular and lean

  • Don't avoid nutrient-dense foods just because of the calorie count! If you cut down on grains and eliminate sugar and processed foods, your calorie intake won't actually be that much. You need protein to be healthy! Fat is not bad for you. eating fat doesn't make you fat; eating processed, high-carb, empty calorie foods is what will make you fat.

  • The EGG….she had an egg on the plate but didn't say anything about it. I've seen a lot of info that says eggs are good sources of energy because of protein and that that have healthy fats. Any input on eggs?????

    The egg was there but she never mentioned it. Eggs, especially hard boiled, are very good for you but I would limit the yolk and eat mostly the white part.

  • This woman is an idiot. Like many so-called health experts, she doles out some misleading information, such as the idea that high-fat foods will not help you lose weight. Actually, if you want to lose weight, you need to eat foods such as eggs, bacon, cheese, steak, etc. The foods you should avoid are those that contain sugar, starches, and refined carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. She is correct that you should not use hydrogenated oils, though.

  • Is is what Sally Fallon labels a 'diet dictocrat'. Limiting animal fats in your diet is just about the worst thing you can do besides eating a lot of transfats.

  • is it the food or the people who eat supper sized servings every time and sit on their butt all day and eat more .i had a fat friend ask me why he is fat and i told him straight up its because whenever we go anywhere you wanna eat and when we eat you get twice as much as i do jumbosized , and you dont do anything physically .everytime i say lets go do anything he would rather play video games and watch tv. its like whenever i see fat ppl they are always eating and they wonder y they are fat.

  • @l544jkl I can't agree with you! The best way to lose weight is to do 5 or 6 small meals a day besides there are many to enjoy all foods and lose weight at the same time in a totally healthy way, a doctor told me that!

  • a good tip, avoid bananas, this fruit is like eating just sugar! it won't help you to lose weight, also reduce the amount of calories you ingest and increase the amount of meals, what I mean is instead of have just 3 meals have 5 small meals, do at least 30 min of exercise, at lest walk!
